First, let's look at the big picture of the preparations.
Preparation Period, Documents, Quarantine, and Costs. When traveling abroad for the first time, you’re likely to be overwhelmed by all the details you need to confirm at once. Our role is to organize everything and manage the preparation process for you right up until your departure. We’ll provide you with a detailed itinerary after you sign the contract. Qualified professionals will handle the preparation and submission of your quarantine documents. We’ve compiled a list of eight frequently asked questions.
General Services
What services does PetAirJPN offer?
When it comes to international travel for dogs and cats, we’ll handle all your preparations right up until the day of departure. We’ll create a schedule working backward from the departure date and handle everything from making appointments and contacting the Animal Quarantine Service to arranging airline bookings and communicating in English with overseas agents. All you need to do is follow the schedule. Qualified professionals will handle the preparation and submission of quarantine documents.
Does PetAirJPN handle the shipping directly?
The actual transport of the pet on the flight is handled by the airline—which is experienced in transporting pets—either as carry-on baggage or cargo. Our role is to handle the preparations leading up to the flight and the procedures on the day of travel. If the pet travels as carry-on baggage, it will be on the same flight as the owner; if it travels as cargo, our local partner will pick it up at the airport upon arrival and deliver it to you.
What types of animals are supported?
We primarily focus on dogs and cats. Whether ferrets, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and other animals can be transported depends on the regulations of your destination and the airline’s policies. If you’d like to bring a pet with you, please contact us for a free consultation first.
Do you provide service anywhere in Japan?
Yes, we serve clients nationwide. While our headquarters is located in Minami-Ikebukuro, Tokyo, the entire process—from the initial consultation to departure—is handled entirely online, so your location is not an issue. While different staff members will handle the process from the initial consultation through signing the contract and the post-contract procedures, there will be no gaps in information during the handoff, and you will have a single point of contact throughout. Whether we can accompany you to the Animal Quarantine Station for departure quarantine varies by region, so please consult with us separately regarding that specific point.
Can I request this service when returning to Japan from abroad?
Yes, we also handle return flights. We’ll assist you every step of the way—from local veterinary clinics and departure procedures to entry quarantine upon arrival in Japan. Our native English-speaking staff, who are originally from the U.S., will handle all communication with overseas parties, so you can rest assured there will be no language barriers.
Can you take over the preparations that another company has already started?
It depends on how far along you are in the process. We’ll review the inspections you’ve already completed and the documents you’ve prepared to determine which parts can be used as is and which parts would be safer to revise. In some cases, we may recommend starting over. Please let us know your current progress during a free consultation.
Documents and Laws
Why do you need an administrative scrivener?
This is because the preparation and submission of documents to government agencies—since it involves receiving compensation—is work that, under the Administrative Scrivener Act, can only be performed by licensed professionals. We are responsible for gathering and organizing information and managing the process until departure. The preparation and submission of quarantine documents are handled by our partner administrative scrivener firm.
Do I need to sign a separate contract with an administrative scrivener’s office?
You do not need to find a separate law office. When you sign the contract, please fill out the power of attorney for the administrative scrivener using our standard form, and we will forward it to our partner law office. We will serve as your sole point of contact for all communications.
Are there additional fees for the administrative scrivener?
Our quotes include the total amount, which covers the administrative scrivener’s fees, so you won’t be faced with any unexpected charges later on. When we issue an invoice, we’ll clearly itemize the administrative scrivener’s fees. You won’t receive separate invoices from different sources.
Fees and Contracts
How much does it cost?
Costs vary significantly depending on the destination, the size of the animal, the time of year, and the required examinations. The approximate price ranges for each package are as follows:Pricing PageAs noted on our website, the exact total amount varies depending on these conditions, so we provide an estimate after discussing your situation with you. Both consultations and estimates are free of charge.
When is payment due?
Generally, payment is made in two installments: an initial deposit upon signing the contract and the balance after your trip. For corporate requests or when bringing multiple pets at once, we can arrange installment payments upon consultation.
Can I cancel partway through?
Yes, you can cancel at any time. Depending on your progress, a cancellation fee may apply; the details will be outlined in the contract. Please note that we cannot refund any out-of-pocket expenses that have already been paid, such as veterinary fees, antibody test fees, and application fees.
Will there be any additional charges later on?
As long as the total cost remains within the scope of the quote provided at the time of booking, we will not add any additional charges without notifying you. However, in the event of unavoidable circumstances as defined in our Terms of Service—such as changes to your destination or travel dates, increased testing or documentation requirements due to changes in destination regulations, or significant exchange rate fluctuations—we will consult with you on a case-by-case basis and provide a revised quote.
Is there a discount for multiple animals?
Yes, we offer volume discounts based on the number of pets. In addition, we offer discounts for early bookings and for repeat customers. The discount amount varies depending on the conditions, so we’ll explain the details during your free consultation.

In this world, a single mistake can lead to a six-month delay.
The order of vaccinations, the timing of microchipping, and the timing of antibody testing. If even one of these is slightly off, our trip will be delayed by half a year. That’s why weTimeline Leading Up to the Departure DateCompile everything into a single document, and have a qualified person review the paperwork before submitting the application. In a world where there are no do-overs, this is to ensure nothing is overlooked.
If you’re still unsure after reading this, I’d be happy to discuss your specific situation directly with you. Since quarantine and vaccination requirements vary depending on your destination and current regulations, please let’s confirm the details together during a free consultation.
Travel Preparations
How far in advance should I start preparing?
It depends largely on your destination. For countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, which require antibody testing, it’s not uncommon for the process to take 180 days or more. Even for other countries, it’s generally advisable to plan for at least three months. It never hurts to start early, so once you’ve decided on your destination, we’ll first provide a general overview of the process during a free consultation (we’ll provide a detailed schedule after you sign the contract).
There are less than three months until departure—will we make it in time?
Depending on your destination, we may still be able to make it in time. For certain destinations in Asia—such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia—as well as some states in the U.S., we may be able to proceed even with relatively short notice. Please let us know the details of your urgent situation first. We’ll work with you to figure out how to make it happen. If you already have a set departure date,By phone (03-4500-5308)-ist (used after a noun indicating someone's occupation, pursuits, disposition, etc.)FormPlease let us know if that's the case. We'll make it a priority to look into it.
Is a microchip required?
It is required in many countries. Even if your child already has one, it may need to be replaced depending on compliance with international standards (ISO 11784/11785) or the date it was fitted. We will make a decision based on your child’s situation and destination.
Should I just go to my regular vet?
You can get vaccines and basic checkups at your regular vet’s office. However, there are some tests—such as the rabies antibody test—that only a limited number of clinics can perform. In such cases, we’ll refer you to a clinic that can perform the test.
How many times will you visit the veterinary clinic during the preparation period?
Depending on your destination, you can generally expect to visit 2 to 6 times. Think of it as making a trip for each milestone: vaccination, blood draw for antibody testing, health checkup, and pre-departure medical exam. We’ll note which hospital to visit in which week on the schedule we’ll provide after you sign the contract, so you won’t need to keep checking your calendar yourself.
Can elderly pets travel?
There is no upper age limit. However, depending on your pet’s physical condition, a veterinarian may determine that it is safer to postpone the procedure. Before signing the contract, please show us the results of your pet’s health checkup so we can review the veterinarian’s assessment and work with you to determine a plan that is appropriate for your pet.
Pet Safety
Is it really safe to take a plane?
To minimize stress as much as possible, we select an airline with which we are familiar and choose flights based on factors such as temperature, air pressure, and flight duration. However, the level of stress experienced varies depending on the animal’s physical condition, age, breed, and the airline’s judgment. During our consultation, we will ask about your pet’s physical condition and, if necessary, consult with your regular veterinarian to recommend a flight that will be as stress-free as possible.
Can brachycephalic breeds (such as Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Persian cats) travel as well?
Some airlines restrict the transport of brachycephalic breeds—such as Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Persian cats—due to concerns about breathing difficulties, and they are particularly cautious during periods of high temperatures. We’ll determine which airlines allow travel, in which seasons, and on which routes—taking into account even the compatibility of specific flight routes—and propose the best option for your pet.
Which is safer: carry-on luggage or checked luggage?
It is generally said that traveling in the cabin (as carry-on luggage) with their owner causes less stress for pets. However, depending on the pet’s size or destination regulations, you may have no choice but to send your pet in the cargo hold. Even in the cargo hold, pets are transported in a climate-controlled compartment designed specifically for them. Which option is less stressful depends on the pet’s size, breed, and destination regulations, so we will assess the best course of action after consulting with you.
Should I take a sedative while traveling?
Many airlines and veterinarians do not recommend sedatives, as unexpected side effects can occur due to changes in air pressure. The key is to get your pet accustomed to the crate before departure and to ensure your pet is in good health. Preparing by focusing on these two points will give you peace of mind.
Can I travel with a pet that is pregnant or nursing?
Many airlines restrict travel during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because it places a significant strain on both the mother and the child. For safety reasons, it is best to follow your veterinarian’s advice and plan your trip after the birthing and breastfeeding periods are over. It’s never too late to wait until things have settled down.
Rather than saying, “It’s okay,”
A schedule I can check.
On the Day of Departure and After Arrival
How should I choose a crate (carrier)?
You’ll need a carrier that meets IATA (International Air Transport Association) standards—one that’s secure enough to prevent your pet from escaping and allows for proper ventilation. If you choose the wrong size, you may be denied boarding on the day of your flight. After you sign the contract, we’ll recommend a carrier that fits your pet’s size.
What should I do the day before and on the day of departure?
On the day of departure, the process involves undergoing an exit inspection at the Animal Quarantine Station to receive your certificate, checking in at the airport, and boarding your flight. To help you avoid getting lost in the morning, we’ll provide you with a flowchart summarizing “what to do, where, and at what time” on a single sheet by the day before. If necessary, a staff member will accompany you that morning.
I don't speak English. Is there any support available after I arrive there?
It’s okay if you don’t speak English. We have native English-speaking staff from the U.S. and are in contact with local agents. If you run into any trouble after you arrive, just contact us via LINE or email—you can write in Japanese. We’ll handle all English communication with the local agents on your behalf.
What if the owner can't come along?
In that case, we will arrange for transport via cargo. We use the airline’s pet cargo service and, upon request, can also arrange for a local agent to pick up your pet at the airport and deliver it to your destination (subject to the country or region). Since you won’t be there, it’s even more important than usual to get your pet used to the crate and monitor its health before departure.
What kind of support is available after I arrive?
Our basic service covers everything up until you receive the arrival confirmation notification stating, “We’ve arrived safely.” We’re happy to discuss additional services, such as finding a local veterinary clinic or handling pet-related procedures in your new location. Please feel free to reach out again once you’ve settled in.

Are there any countries that are particularly difficult?
Yes, there are. For destinations like Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Hawaii—which require antibody tests—the preparation period is long and the requirements are detailed, so the process can take 180 days or more. The more difficult the destination, the sooner you should start preparing to ensure peace of mind.
Are there any differences in the procedures for dogs and cats?
The general process is the same for both dogs and cats. However, the specific tests required and some of the paperwork will differ. We’ll provide detailed guidance based on whether your pet is a dog or a cat and where you’re taking it.
Can I transport multiple animals at the same time?
Yes, you can bring several dogs with you. However, some airlines have limits on the number of dogs allowed on a single flight. If you’d like your whole family to travel on the same flight, it’s a good idea to book your seats early to be on the safe side. There are also discounts available based on the number of dogs.
Are there any dog breeds that are prohibited or cannot be transported?
Depending on your destination, some countries prohibit the entry of certain dog breeds, such as some fighting dog breeds. Additionally, airlines may restrict the transport of brachycephalic breeds. Please let us know the breed of the dog you wish to bring with you as soon as possible. We will check in advance to see if there is a way to transport them.
What happens if the entry restrictions for my destination change?
We keep a close eye on regulations in various countries on a daily basis. If there are any changes, we’ll notify the affected customers individually. Even if the rules change while you’re in the middle of preparing, we’ll assess the impact and then suggest additional steps or alternative solutions. You don’t have to worry about this on your own.
